About the Course
The MA in International Disaster Management is designed for participants who want to increase both theoretical and practical management skills in preparation, response and recovery from natural and man-made disaster events.
Within the HCRI, this will take place through multidisciplinary study focusing on the current trends in international humanitarian action and risk management tools commonly used by emergency professionals. The core curriculum is balanced between the development of quantitative analysis skills to support emergency management policies and ethical issues in global humanitarian actions. The interdisciplinary team of researchers at the HCRI will also support academic study through practical experience in disaster preparation and response.
The HCRI MA in International Disaster Management is unique due to its focus on international humanitarian actions for disaster and the wide variety of available course units from history, politics, development studies, the arts and medicine. This results in a course that is suitable as a way to development initial skills in disaster management or support continuing education for disaster management professionals.
Intended learning outcomes of the programme
Students should be able to show a critical understanding of:
1. Current best practice in disaster management and development practice and the ability to apply best practice in an international setting, specifically within less developed countries and transitional societies
2. Challenge numeracy skills through an introduction to basic statistical analysis and quantitative risk analysis.
3. Ethical issues in humanitarianism dealing with international actions taken by government and non-government organisations following natural and man-made disaster.
4. Current thematic issues in disaster management including the possible implications of climate change and terrorism on civil protection.
5. Provide students with the opportunity to conduct substantive disaster analysis that will be peer-reviewed & presented in both an informal and formal setting.

You will undertake 180 credits of course units with the dissertation providing a contribution of 60 credits.

Entry Requirements
An Upper Second Class Bachelor's degree or the overseas equivalent although each application is judged on its own merits and exceptions to this entry requirement may be made.
English language:
Students whose first language is not English are required to hold an overall score of IELTS 7.0 to include a writing score of 7.0, or an overall internet-based TOEFL test score of 100.
Bursaries
The HCRI MA bursary, worth £5,000, will fund home fees or can be used as partial payment for the overseas fee. It is tenable for one year only. Applicants should state their interest in the award within the funding section of the online application form and also provide a personal statement (max 500 words) outlining why they have chosen to study this particular MA and what they will bring to the course. The HCRI MA bursary is awarded based on a number of criteria including previous academic performance, relevant professional experience, reference letters, and the quality of the reflections in the applicant's personal statement. Deadline for applications is 1 June 2012.
